Usability Study for Dancing in VR @Aalto Motion Lab

Duet is a VR dance game for two players, who interact via a glowing string linked to their avatars' "hands." Our main focus here was to understand how our design decisions have affected the user's perception of space and network latency.

Overview

Understanding user’s perception of space and latency in VR Duet is a VR dance game for two players, who interact via a glowing string linked to their avatars’ “hands.” While VR promises shared dancing experiences remotely, challenges include network latency, the lack of full-body tracking in affordable devices, and limited real-world space in users’ homes.

This was done as a part of ongoing research by Markus Laattala at Aalto under the supervision of Prof. Perttu Hämäläinen .

Objectives of the usability study

Through the usability study, we aimed to understand:

  • Players’ perceptions of the space in relation to the design decisions for “Duet.”
  • Their awareness of latency introduced during the study and its impact on their overall experience.

My role as User Research Assistant

I was primarily involved with

  • Participant recruitment,
  • Questionnaire preparation,
  • Usability testing and
  • Conducting user interviews for the team at Motion Lab
